Prof. Dr. Hans Koster is a Full Professor of Urban Economics and Real Estate at the Department of Spatial Economics, Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. He holds affiliations with the Tinbergen Institute and the Centre for Economic Policy Research (CEPR). His research focuses on urban economics, land use policies, and the economic analysis of cities and regions, employing big data and advanced econometric techniques. Koster has received prestigious awards, including the Sakıp Sabancı International Research Award (2020) and the Van der Knaap Prize (2015). He actively contributes to policy through roles at the Centraal Planbureau (The Hague) and Serve the City Utrecht.
Education: BSc Economics (Erasmus University Rotterdam); MSc Spatial Economics (cum laude, VU Amsterdam); PhD (2013, VU Amsterdam).
Research Interests: Urban housing markets, agglomeration economics, land use regulations, environmental policy, and spatial disparities. Recent projects include analyzing wind turbine impacts on housing markets and the welfare effects of greenbelt policies in England.
Grants: Over €2M in funding from sources like the Dutch Ministry of Economic Affairs and Climate Policy, IAS Vanguard Fellowship, and VENI Grant. Key projects address housing supply, skills mismatch in agglomeration, and urban planning economics.
Teaching: Courses include Applied Econometrics for Spatial Economics and Urban Economic Challenges and Policies. Supervised 3 PhD theses, with ongoing collaborations at Oxford, LSE, and the London School of Economics.
Collaborations: International partnerships with institutions like the Higher School of Economics (Russia) and the Centre for Economic Performance (LSE). Research spans Europe, China, and the Netherlands.
