Professor Hans Komen is affiliated with the Animal Breeding & Genetics department at Wageningen University & Research. His research focuses on aquaculture genetics, fish breeding, and genomic selection, with a particular emphasis on tilapia, salmon, and seabream. He leads projects addressing genetic improvement for sustainable aquaculture, including biosensor development for real-time in vivo measurements and optimizing breeding programs for resilience and productivity. Komen supervises multiple PhD and EngD students in areas like fish physiology, genetic analysis, and bioeconomic modeling.
His research interests span aquatic organism genomics, environmental adaptation, and the integration of advanced technologies (e.g., deep learning, image analysis) into selective breeding. Recent work includes analyzing swimming performance in rainbow trout and Atlantic salmon, developing multispecies polyculture models, and studying genotype-by-environment interactions in poultry and fish.
