Hans Jörgen Grabe

Professor Hans Jörgen Grabe serves as Group Leader at the German Center for Neurodegenerative Diseases (DZNE) in Greifswald, with strong affiliations to University Medicine Greifswald. His research integrates population-based cohorts including SHIP/TREND (n>8000) and GANI_MED (n>4500), alongside international datasets from UK Biobank and German National Cohort.

His research focuses on three interconnected domains:

• Genetic factors in dementia through the JPND BRIDGET project and NIH-funded CCC initiative
• Development of novel MRI biomarkers including the FS-BA score for brain aging and FS-AD score for Alzheimer's-like atrophy patterns
• Urine metabolomics research establishing metabolic age scores and identifying metabolites associated with brain aging

Professor Grabe coordinates German activities in international collaborations and utilizes advanced techniques including methyl-C sequencing, DTI, and white matter hyperintensity analysis. His work bridges molecular parameters with clinical and brain imaging phenotypes to advance early risk assessment of neurodegenerative diseases.

His laboratory collaborates with Professor Johannes Hertel's group on gut microbiome analyses to understand microbial contributions to brain health and neurodegeneration.
