Professor Hans Hendrischke is Professor of Chinese Business and Management at the University of Sydney Business School. He serves as Executive Director of the University of Sydney Centre in China (Suzhou) and leads the Business School's China Research Network while chairing the Business and Economics Cluster of the University's China Studies Centre. He is also a member of the Sydney Institute of Agriculture and The Net Zero Institute.
Hendrischke received his MA and PhD from Bochum University in Germany. His academic journey includes education at universities in Germany, Taiwan, and Japan, followed by postgraduate research at the Contemporary China Institute at the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London. He speaks and writes fluent Chinese, having lived in China from 1979 working first for the diplomatic service and later in the finance industry.
As an institutional economist, Hendrischke pioneered qualitative research on China's nascent private enterprise sector, interviewing hundreds of Chinese entrepreneurs. His research evolved from institutional analysis of China's decentralised local governance to focus on international business research regarding multinational enterprises. His current interests include the migration of institutions and cross-border corporate interaction under China's Belt and Road Initiative, building on earlier work on border trade and economic regionalisation. His engaged research includes a long-term strategic cooperation with KPMG Australia producing the influential 'Demystifying Chinese Investment in Australia' series.
Hendrischke's publication portfolio shows a clear trend toward analyzing the shifting patterns of Chinese investment in Australia, with recent work documenting a significant decline from previous levels but noting a strategic shift toward greenfield investments in sectors like electric vehicles, solar energy, and industrial machinery. His research increasingly examines how Chinese enterprises navigate institutional differences between home and host countries.
Hendrischke actively supervises PhD students, with current research including Chengyi LI's work on 'The role of government in ecosystem emergence - A longitudinal case study in China.'
