Hans Cuypers

Hans Cuypers is a Full Professor in the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science at Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e), where he leads the Discrete Algebra and Geometry research group since 2009. His work spans both theoretical mathematics and educational technology, with significant contributions to discrete algebra, geometry, and technology-enhanced mathematics education.

Hans Cuypers' research primarily focuses on discrete algebra and geometry, with particular expertise in finite geometry, group theory, graph theory, design theory, and algebraic combinatorics. His work bridges abstract algebraic structures with computational approaches, exploring connections between Lie algebras, extremal elements, buildings, and various geometrical structures. He has also made significant contributions to technology-enhanced education of mathematics and science, actively implementing blended learning approaches at TU/e and participating in numerous national and European projects developing digital content and software for mathematics teaching.

His recent publications (2021-2023) demonstrate a consistent focus on the interplay between algebraic structures and geometric configurations. Key themes include symplectic polar spaces, Lie algebras characterized by extremal elements, line graphs of multi-graphs, and connections between Clifford algebras and quadratic forms. These works reveal a deep exploration of the structural properties of mathematical objects through multiple lenses including finite fields, combinatorial geometry, and algebraic theory.

Hans Cuypers serves as an editor and reviewer for several prestigious journals including NAW, Innovations in Incidence Geometry, and International Journal of Educational Technology in Higher Education. He has (co-)organized numerous meetings and workshops on mathematics, algebra and algorithms, as well as on e-learning of mathematics.

Within the Discrete Algebra and Geometry research group at TU/e, Professor Cuypers leads investigations into the theoretical foundations of algebraic and geometric structures while maintaining a strong commitment to innovative educational approaches. His office is located in MetaForum 5.065 at the Eindhoven University of Technology.
