Hans-Conrad zur Loye is the David W. Robinson Palmetto Professor of Chemistry and Carolina Distinguished Professor at the University of South Carolina, Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry within the McCausland College of Arts and Sciences. His research focuses on solid-state chemistry, particularly the synthesis and characterization of novel materials for nuclear waste immobilization, luminescent materials, and crystal growth. He has held leadership roles including Associate Dean for Research and Graduate Education (2015-2020) and has been affiliated with the Savannah River National Laboratory since 2020.
Education: Sc.B. (1983, Brown University), Ph.D. (1988, UC Berkeley), Postdoc (1988-89, Northwestern University).
Research Interests:
- Crystal growth of complex oxides, fluorides, and chalcogenides.
- Development of hierarchical wasteforms for nuclear waste storage.
- Scintillator materials and luminescent properties.
- Actinide chemistry, including plutonium and uranium compounds.
Key Achievements:
- Over $30M in research funding and 500+ peer-reviewed publications.
- Directed the DOE-EFRC Center for Hierarchical Waste Form Materials (2016-2024).
- Recipient of prestigious awards, including the Carolina Distinguished Professorship (2018).
Labs & Teams: Active in the Magnetic Measurement Facility, Powder X-Ray Diffraction Facility, and leads the Center for Hierarchical Waste Form Materials.
