Hannes Schroeder serves as Associate Professor and group leader at the Globe Institute, University of Copenhagen, where he also heads the Section for Molecular Ecology and Evolution. He is a founding member of the University of Copenhagen's School of Archaeology and previously held a Senior Researcher position at Leiden University from September 2013 to August 2016.
Dr. Schroeder earned his DPhil in archaeology from the University of Oxford in 2009 and established his independent research group at the University of Copenhagen in 2017. His research program centers on ancient genomics to investigate historical population movements and the evolution of infectious diseases. He co-developed the Ancient Genome Atlas with Mikkel Nørtoft and currently leads the ERC Consolidator Project AlpGen, which examines population history in the circum-Alpine region from 4000-600 BCE.
His research spans multiple disciplines, combining archaeology, genomics, and historical analysis to address fundamental questions about human history. Dr. Schroeder's work has been published in top-tier journals including Nature, Science, and PNAS, with his research on Viking Age smallpox, Anglo-Saxon migration, and pre-Columbian American contact receiving significant attention across numerous news outlets and academic platforms.
Dr. Schroeder's publication record demonstrates a consistent trajectory of high-impact research, with recent work examining mutualistic interactions in island ecosystems, ancient tomb occupants in Greece, and the historical spread of leprosy. His interdisciplinary approach has generated new methodologies for understanding human history through genetic evidence, with implications for archaeology, anthropology, and medical history.
