Hannes Opelz is an Assistant Professor in the Department of French at Trinity College Dublin. He holds a PhD from the University of Cambridge. His research focuses on 20th-21st century French thought and aesthetics, combining methodologies from mimetic theory, deconstruction, myth studies, and environmental humanities. He currently leads two book projects on Maurice Blanchot and Alex Garland's cinematic work. Administrative roles include Director of Postgraduate Programmes in Identities and Cultures of Europe, and Senior Fresh Coordinator in the French Department.
Teaching specialties include modern French philosophy, literature, cinema, and translation at undergraduate levels, with postgraduate modules on philosophy's intersections with aesthetics, technology, and Gaia theory.
Recent publications include special journal issues on Philippe Lacoue-Labarthe (2017) and Catherine Malabou (2022), alongside essays on Blanchot and science fiction. He has mentored postdoctoral projects like 'Time and the Other Capitalism' (Anne Mulhall) and 'Xenogenesis: Octavia Butler' (John Wilkins).
Research interests span science fiction spatiality, neurobiology, and environmental humanities, with current projects exploring Blanchot's legacy and Garland's audiovisual narratives.
