Hannelore Bauer is a Senior Scientist and Privatdozent at the University of Salzburg's Department of Environment & Biodiversity within the Faculty of Natural and Life Sciences. Her research focuses on vertebrate anatomy, morphology, and organogenesis, particularly the role of epithelial tissue barriers in development and evolution. She investigates how vertebrate brain architecture relates to environmental factors from evolutionary and modeling perspectives. Bauer also develops interactive teaching tools to enhance students' understanding of animal anatomy and physiology. Her work integrates molecular, cellular, and evolutionary approaches to study tissue barriers like the blood-brain barrier and blood-CSF barrier.
Her research has produced over 15 publications since 2008, addressing topics such as tissue barrier mechanisms, neurovascular interactions, and oncology. Bauer collaborates internationally on projects involving tight junction proteins, oxidative stress effects, and cancer cell migration dynamics. She maintains an active lab group and contributes to both undergraduate and graduate teaching programs at the University of Salzburg.
