Professor Hanneke Muthert holds the Chair in Psychology of Religion with a focus on Spiritual Care and Wellbeing at the University of Groningen's Faculty of Religion, Culture and Society. She leads the Comparative Study of Religion department and chairs the scientific board of the VGVZ (professional organization for spiritual counselors). Her research centers on 'existential rehearsal space,' exploring meaningful exchanges in care and work contexts. Projects include HORIZON Psypal (psychedelic spiritual care in palliative settings), spiritual care training at UMCG, and interventions addressing meaning/identity in mental health. She also serves on the scientific council of the Consortium voor Integrale Zorg en Gezondheid (CIZG).
Her research spans spiritual care in healthcare, mental health, and community contexts, with recent work on chaplaincy outcomes, palliative care, and identity-based care. She collaborates widely, including on ZonMw-funded projects about professional-consumer dialogue in spiritual care and inter-professional collaboration.
