Hanne Louise Jensen is an Associate Professor in the Department of Sociology and Social Work at Aalborg University, Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities. She is an active researcher in the SocMap - Research Group in Sociological Mapping and the MIX - Center for Displacement, Migration and Integration. Her work is deeply engaged with the social and emotional dimensions of place, particularly in marginalized and peripheral areas.
Her research interests include emotional geographies, place attachment, mobility, stigmatized neighborhoods (such as Danish 'ghettos'), rural decline, green transition, and innovative qualitative and ethnographic methods. She investigates how belonging and social practices shape urban and rural spaces and how communities can resist marginalization through care and involvement.
Her recent publications (2024–2025) reveal a strong focus on territorial inequality, educational and employment outcomes in vulnerable areas, and policy evaluation, often using mixed methods including register-based data and ethnographic insights. These works are central to understanding the long-term impacts of urban policies in Denmark.
- EXIT: Exploring sustainable strategies to counteract territorial inequalities (Horizon Europe, 2022–2025)
- GHET-IN: Are “ghettos” a problem for integration of migrants in Denmark? (Independent Research Fund Denmark, 2020–2025)
She has contributed to public discourse through media engagement, including a 2021 article advocating for a more nuanced understanding of urban-rural differences in Denmark. She has also served as a peer reviewer for journals like Mobilities and presented at international conferences such as AAG and RC21.
Jensen is affiliated with research networks that align with UN Sustainable Development Goals, particularly those related to reduced inequalities, sustainable cities, and climate action. Her work emphasizes participatory development, justice, and lived experience in addressing social and spatial challenges.
