Dr. Hannah Whittaker is a Senior Lecturer in Modern African History at Brunel University, affiliated with the Department of Social and Political Sciences within the College of Business, Arts and Social Sciences. Her work bridges historical analysis with contemporary political challenges in Eastern Africa.

Whittaker’s research focuses on colonialism, borders, development, and conflict in Africa. She explores frontier development in Kenya, state-building, and public memory of empire across Britain and Africa. Her work combines archival research with oral histories to analyze long-term colonial and postcolonial impacts.
Her recent publications examine themes like imperial memorialization, ethnic conflict, and urban Somali diaspora integration. She received funding from the British Academy/Leverhulme Trust for research on development’s role in marginalization.
