Her research explores how langgam Jawa performance evokes nostalgia (kerinduan) among Javanese musicians and listeners, emphasizing the social role of this emotion in contemporary ethnic Javanese identity. She also investigates gender dynamics, particularly how women's voices are central to cultivating longing in the repertoire.
Standiford co-founded Rumput, a stringband and shadow theater group studying kroncong and wayang kulit. The ensemble has performed internationally and collaborated with Indonesian artists. Additionally, she plays old-time music with Pittsburgh-based Howling Mob, blending clawhammer banjo traditions with Appalachian influences.
