Hannah Mayne

Hannah Mayne is a Research Fellow at the Katz Center for Advanced Judaic Studies, affiliated with the University of Pennsylvania’s School of Arts & Sciences. She is completing her Ph.D. in Anthropology at the University of Toronto, focusing on the political dimensions of contemporary religious Jewish life.

Research Interests: Mayne explores gender equality debates, ritual transformations, and public religiosity within ultra-Orthodox Jewish communities. Her work highlights how women’s emerging prayer practices in Jerusalem challenge traditional gender structures in Orthodox Judaism.

Selected Trends in Publications: Her articles analyze the intersection of ritual, gender, and religious law, with a focus on ultra-Orthodox women’s groups and Western Wall practices in Jerusalem.
