Hannah James is an External employee at Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB), affiliated with the Department of Archaeology, Environmental Change, and Geochemistry, and the School of History, Archaeology, Arts, Philosophy, and Ethics. She specializes in strontium isotope analysis, mobility studies, and bioarchaeology, focusing on ancient human populations' diets, migration patterns, and environmental interactions. Her research bridges archaeology, geochemistry, and environmental science, with notable contributions to strontium isoscape development.
Recent work includes the ROAST project (2024–2027), reconstructing archaeological diets via strontium isotopes, and the IsoBel initiative to map Belgium's strontium baselines. Her articles explore Roman mobility, Bronze Age communities, and medieval urban migration. James has received awards such as the BioArCh 'Gamechanger' Prize (2024) and the UKAS Postdoctoral Poster Prize (2022).
