Giacomo Capuzzo is an active researcher specializing in archaeology with a focus on cremation practices, radiocarbon dating, and Bronze/Iron Age studies. He currently holds a Marie Skłodowska-Curie fellowship at University of Trento (March 2023-February 2025) while maintaining affiliations with Vrije Universiteit Brussel where he works in the Department of Archaeology, Environmental changes & Geo-Chemistry within the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences.
His educational background includes a Cum laude PhD in Prehistoric Archaeology from Autonomous University of Barcelona, awarded on July 30, 2014, with a dissertation titled "Space-temporal analysis of radiocarbon evidence and associated archaeological record: from Danube to Ebro Rivers and from Bronze to Iron Ages".
Capuzzo's research interests span multiple interdisciplinary fields including Archaeology, Biogeochemistry, Prehistory, Radiocarbon dating, Protohistory, Isotopes analysis, and funerary archaeology. His work particularly focuses on cremation practices, human mobility patterns during prehistoric periods, and the application of isotopic analysis to archaeological questions. He has developed expertise in analyzing cremated remains and understanding funerary practices from the Bronze Age through Iron Age in European contexts.
His publication record shows consistent research output with 28 research outputs documented, including recent significant contributions in 2024-2025 on strontium isoscapes for Belgium, multi-proxy approaches to reconstructing ancient human mobility, and analyses of cremated remains from various archaeological sites across Europe. His research demonstrates strong methodological innovation, particularly in combining isotopic analysis with traditional archaeological approaches.

Capuzzo has been actively involved in research projects including EUOA3: MSCA - MOBILITY AND LIFE HISTORIES IN THE ALPS, which ran from March to October 2024. He serves on PhD committees, most recently at Universiteit Gent from June to August 2024, and regularly presents at major archaeological conferences. His collaborative network is extensive, with numerous co-authors across European institutions, particularly in Belgium and Italy. His research has gained significant attention, with mentions across multiple social media platforms, news outlets, and academic readership platforms.
His work is centered around several key laboratories and research groups focused on archaeological science, particularly those specializing in isotopic analysis of human remains. He collaborates extensively with researchers working on the IsoBel project (strontium isoscape for Belgium) and participates in international teams studying prehistoric social strategies in mountain environments.
