Hannah Dee is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Computer Science at the University of Leeds. She holds a BSc in Cognitive Science (1996), MA in Philosophy (1998), and PhD in Computing (2005), all from the University of Leeds. Her work focuses on computer vision, diversity in technology, and educational outreach, particularly for women in computing. She founded the BCSWomen Lovelace Colloquium in 2008 and served on BCSWomen committees until 2023. Dee has been recognized with awards such as the BCS Meritorious Service Award (2016), Suffrage Science Award (2018–2020), and an MBE (2024) for contributions to technology and gender equality. She is part-time, working Monday-Wednesday-Friday.
Her research spans applied computer vision (e.g., shadow detection for robotics), plant imaging (e.g., leaf segmentation), and educational initiatives to improve student engagement. Notable projects include the Dynamic Modelling of Plant Growth with Computer Vision (2014–2016), funded by EPSRC. She contributed to datasets like the ARIVVD (Aberystwyth Robot Infant Vision Video Dataset). Teaching awards include Senior Fellowship of the HEA (2018) and multiple Student Led Teaching Awards for innovative modules like Computer Vision and Client Side Graphics.
Dee’s work aligns with UN Sustainable Development Goals, particularly gender equality (SDG 5) and quality education (SDG 4). Media highlights include features in Computer Weekly and recognition in the King’s Birthday Honours list. She actively organizes conferences and workshops, advocating for inclusive academic communities.
