Professor Hannah Chalmers holds a Personal Chair in Sustainable Energy Systems at the University of Edinburgh's School of Engineering. Her work focuses on advancing carbon capture and storage (CCUS) technologies, waste-to-energy systems, and sustainable energy integration. She leads research on decarbonizing energy systems through innovative thermal integration, flexible power plant operations, and policy frameworks for CCUS deployment.
Research Interests: Professor Chalmers' research spans CCUS hubs, negative emissions technologies, renewable energy integration, and operational flexibility of power systems. She explores synergies between waste-to-energy infrastructure and carbon capture, as well as strategies to reduce wind energy curtailment in future grids. Her work emphasizes both technical innovation and non-technical challenges like policy and stakeholder engagement.
Grants & Projects: She has led/co-investigated 26+ projects including the NEWEST-CCUS programme (focusing on waste-to-energy carbon capture) and the FleCCSnet project (designing flexible CCS networks). She also spearheaded the VisNET initiative to enhance international academic collaboration and gender equity in STEM careers.
Key Contributions: With 118 peer-reviewed publications, her research bridges engineering and policy, addressing challenges in CCS infrastructure, hydrogen production, and grid flexibility. She advocates for systemic approaches to climate mitigation through interdisciplinary collaboration and policy innovation.
