Hannah Bartlett is a Professor at the Optometry & Vision Science Research Group (OVSRG) within Aston University's College of Health and Life Sciences. She also serves as Associate Pro-Vice Chancellor for Diversity & Inclusion since 2019, overseeing gender equality initiatives (Athena Swan) and Aston's Race Equality Charter submission. She co-founded 'Inspiring Women at Aston' and leads working groups addressing pay gaps, inclusive recruitment, disability support, and curriculum decolonization.
Her qualifications include a First Class Honours degree in Optometry (2000, Aston University), a PhD in Ocular Nutrition (2005), a Master's in Education (2017), and an ILM Level 5 Certificate in Coaching & Mentoring (2018). She holds a Principal Fellowship of Advance HE (2019).
Research interests span ocular nutrition, low vision technology, macular pigment, and clinical education. Key projects include developing hand-held low-vision tools, evaluating ophthalmic instrumentation, and investigating nutritional behavior's impact on eye health. Collaborations span engineering, computer science, and health psychology.
Her 70+ publications focus on topics like macular degeneration, dietary interventions, and diversity strategies. Notable contributions include a 2025 analysis of gender stereotypes in Nigerian universities and a 2023 study on color contrast sensitivity in AMD patients. Awards include the Principal Fellowship of Advance HE.
Teaching roles include BSc Optometry Programme leadership and administrative roles like Admissions Tutor. Consultancy work advises universities globally on equality data and inclusion frameworks. She designed Aston’s 'Inclusive Aston' diversity strategy.
Labs/Teams: Active in OVSRG and the Aston Research Centre for Health in Ageing. Leads interdisciplinary projects integrating technology, nutrition, and equity initiatives.
