Hannah Bacon is an Assistant Professor of Philosophy and Director of Graduate Studies in the Department of Philosophy and Religious Studies at Louisiana State University. Her research focuses on contemporary continental philosophy, with special emphasis on intersections of social/political philosophy, ethics, philosophy of law, incarceration studies, and critical phenomenology of race, gender, and embodiment. She holds a B.A. from Earlham College (2007), M.A. from The New School (2014), and Ph.D. from SUNY Stony Brook (2020).
Her work integrates interdisciplinary approaches to trauma theory, prison education advocacy, and phenomenological analysis. She has taught at Marymount Manhattan College as a Visiting Professor and served as a Ferraro Mellon Fellow in Prison Higher Education. Bacon is also a certified birth and death doula, reflecting her commitment to embodied ethical practices.
Recent publications explore durational trauma, photography's role in trauma discourse, and phenomenological approaches to religious texts. Awards include the Provost’s Fund for Innovation in Research (2024) and recognition for teaching excellence. Her courses span bioethics, existentialism, political philosophy, and law.
Bacon’s research initiatives include collaborations like the Louisiana History in Sacred Spaces project and the Coastal Voices Podcast, emphasizing community-engaged scholarship. She actively bridges academic philosophy with public advocacy, particularly in carceral justice and ethical end-of-life practices.
