Dr. Hanna Oksanen serves as an Adjunct Professor and Principal Investigator at the University of Helsinki, leading the Molecular Principles of Viruses research group within the Molecular and Integrative Biosciences Research Programme at the Faculty of Biological and Environmental Sciences. She also acts as Vice-Director of the Biomolecular Complex Purification Core Facility (Biocomplex), advancing purification techniques for large biomolecular complexes.
- Current affiliations: University of Helsinki
- Key roles: Research group leader, Biocomplex core facility leadership, ICTV committee member
Her research focuses on molecular virology, particularly archaeal viruses, using structural biology to explore viral entry, assembly, and host interactions. She specializes in evolutionary virology, examining sequence/structural similarities across domains of life, and contributes to virus taxonomy standardization through the International Committee on Taxonomy of Viruses (ICTV).
Recent publications highlight her work in Cryo-EM structural analysis of extremophile viruses, taxonomic debates, and purification methodology development. Key journals include Science Advances, Msphere, and mBio, with subfields spanning viral dynamics, ICTV taxonomy, and biocomplex purification. Her methods involve asymmetrical flow field-flow fractionation and monolithic chromatography for structural studies.
Dr. Oksanen's leadership extends to national and international infrastructures, including Structural Biology Finland and Instruct-ERIC. She supports research through industry collaborations and has contributed to projects like Horizon Europe ARCTECH, focusing on viral adaptation in extreme environments.
