Her research focuses on the physiological and behavioral aspects of early labor, particularly in first-time mothers, and on maternal and newborn care-seeking behaviors in rural African communities. She integrates clinical insight with academic rigor in her work on evidence-based midwifery and critical thinking in practice.
The two most recent publications highlight her dual research focus: one on the clinical transition into labor using prospective cohort methodology, and another on public health challenges in neonatal care access in rural Zambia. These reflect her expertise in both clinical midwifery and global maternal health.
She is an active member of key professional organizations:
- Deutsche Gesellschaft Hebammenwissenschaft (DGHWi)
- Deutscher Hebammenverband (DHV)
- QMNC Early Labour Research Group
Hanna Gehling has held significant academic and leadership roles, including Deputy Head and Course Leader at the Gießen School of Midwifery (2018–2023), and was a Research Associate and Study Coordinator at the Medical School Hannover. She has also contributed to international midwifery education through voluntary service in Malawi and India. No specific grants are mentioned, but her research activities suggest ongoing scholarly engagement.
She leads in the academic development of midwifery professionals and is involved in research initiatives such as the QMNC Early Labour Research Group, which aims to improve understanding and management of early labor phases through high-quality, evidence-driven research.
