Hani Mowafi, MD, MPH is an Associate Professor of Emergency Medicine and Chief of the Section of Global Health and International Emergency Medicine at Yale School of Medicine. He serves as an Affiliated Faculty member at the Yale Institute for Global Health and as an Emergency Care Consultant for the WHO's Global Emergency and Trauma Care Initiative. Dr. Mowafi co-directs two major NIH-funded research programs: the Middle East and North Africa Program for Advanced Injury Research (MENA PAIR) and the Global Environmental and Occupational Health Hub in the Middle East and North Africa (GEOHealth MENA), both partnerships between Yale University and the American University of Beirut.
Dr. Mowafi's research focuses on developing the science and practice of emergency care in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) where the burden of emergency conditions is highest. His work spans assessing health burdens of trauma and injury in LMICs, health and human security in humanitarian emergencies, and developing metrics for global emergency care. His 2024-2025 publications reveal a strong emphasis on healthcare worker safety in Lebanon, conflict-related injuries in Gaza and the Occupied Palestinian Territory, refugee health in Lebanon, and surgical care in Malawi.
His research portfolio demonstrates consistent focus on humanitarian emergencies, with particular attention to the Middle East and Africa. Recent publications show increasing emphasis on occupational health for healthcare workers in crisis settings, violence against healthcare infrastructure, and pediatric trauma in conflict zones. Dr. Mowafi has been instrumental in establishing emergency care systems in resource-limited settings through his leadership in the MENA PAIR and GEOHealth MENA programs.
