Handy Acosta Cuellar is an Instructor in the Department of Spanish & Portuguese at Tulane University's School of Liberal Arts. He specializes in Spanish language education, Latin American history, and African diaspora studies. His teaching includes courses like Introductory Spanish, Intermediate Spanish, and Latin American Studies with a service-learning component. He has received notable awards, including the Changemaker Catalyst Award and the Robert Cartmill Achievement Award. His research focuses on colonial Cuban history, African contributions to metallurgy, and language pedagogy. He actively contributes to community initiatives, such as service-learning programs for Hispanic communities and coordinating the NOLA Jazz Museum Transcribathon.
Acosta Cuellar has authored textbooks and scholarly articles, including a 2022 publication on African enslaved labor in Cuban copper smelting. He has held leadership roles, such as President of the Latin American Stone Center (LAGO-L), and serves on Tulane's Department Diversity Committee.
