Carolina Caballero

Carolina Caballero is the Zemurray-Stone Senior Professor of Practice in Latin American Studies/Spanish & Portuguese at Tulane University and Associate Director of the Cuban & Caribbean Studies Institute (CCSI). She holds a joint appointment in the Department of Spanish and Portuguese and the Stone Center for Latin American Studies. Her research focuses on 20th-21st century Spanish-speaking Caribbean texts (especially theater/performance) and diaspora studies. Caballero teaches in English/Spanish across literary, cultural, and Latinx studies, and oversees Tulane’s undergraduate Latin American Studies program. Since 2012, she has directed CCSI’s academic programs, organizing conferences, speaker series, and summer study abroad initiatives in Cuba and Panamá.

Her research emphasizes Cuban theater, cultural identity, and diasporic narratives. Recent work explores transnational performance practices and the intersection of art with socio-political movements in the Caribbean region. Caballero’s publications analyze contemporary dramaturgy, migration experiences, and cultural memory in Cuban and Latin American contexts.

Awardees include the prestigious Simón Rodríguez Award for Teaching (2013) and multiple grants supporting her research. She has co-directed Tulane’s Cuba summer program since 2012, fostering student engagement through immersive academic travel programs. Caballero’s administrative roles include coordinating Spanish language courses for heritage speakers and advising curriculum development for undergraduate Latin American Studies programs.
