Dr. Hanan Jasim Khammas is a Lecturer of Comparative Literature at the Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB), where she also earned her PhD in Literary Theory and Comparative Literature. She serves as a Postdoctoral Researcher at UAB's ADHUC Research Centre for Theory, Gender, and Sexuality, and is affiliated with the UNESCO Chair Women, Development, and Cultures. Her work bridges Arabic literature with European and American traditions, focusing on the corporeal semiotics during the War on Terror.
Her research projects include Heterotopias in the Imaginaries of Spain-Morocco Relations at Universidad Autónoma de Madrid, and prior involvement in Gender(s), Language(s) in Contemporary Arabness and Construction of Identities, Gender, and Artistic Creation in Arabism. She coordinates UAB's Master's program in Contemporary Arabic Studies and contributes to editorial boards like Revista Banipal.
Dr. Khammas's academic work explores the dialectics of fragmented bodies and narratives in post-2003 Iraqi fiction, analyzing socio-political anxieties through Mikhail Bakhtin's grotesque realism and Julia Kristeva's abjection theory. Her publications span peer-reviewed journals such as Rivista degli Studi Orientali and 452ºF Revista de Teoría de la Literatura y Literatura Comparada, with a 2024 monograph on comparative wartime literature. She actively participates in research networks like CALITME (Literary Cartographies of the Mediterranean) and explores intersections between continental philosophy, critical theory, and psychoanalysis in her scholarship.
