Hamid Afshar, M.D., is a Professor at Baylor College of Medicine and holds leadership roles including Associate Director of the Electrophysiology Fellowship Program at the Michael E DeBakey VA Medical Center and Director of Research and Innovation at Baylor College of Medicine. He specializes in Cardiac Electrophysiology and Cardiovascular Disease, with expertise in catheter ablation, cardiac device implantation, and innovative therapies like laser lead extraction and left atrial appendage occlusion. His clinical practice and research focus on advancing treatments for arrhythmias and heart failure, including pioneering the use of devices such as the WATCHMAN and S-ICD in the VA system.
Education: MD from Tehran University Medical School (1988), followed by residencies and fellowships in Iran and the U.S., culminating in a Cardiac Electrophysiology Fellowship at Baylor College of Medicine and Texas Heart Institute.
Research highlights include leading the Multicenter SMART-CRT study and developing a nationwide telehealth service for rural VA patients. Awards include the 2021 STAR Award for Excellence in Patient Care. He actively teaches electrophysiology fellows and contributes to clinical trials evaluating innovative techniques like vein of Marshall ethanol infusion in atrial fibrillation ablation.
