- Master's degree in architecture from the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen
- PhD from the Oslo School of Architecture and Design
Ellefsen's research focuses on urban development, place-making, and planning, with particular emphasis on how architecture and urban form can contribute to sustainable and inclusive communities. His interdisciplinary background combines practical architecture, research, and teaching. Through his PhD work, he researched fjord city development in Oslo and neoliberal urban development from the 1980s to the present day. In recent years, through the research group Norwegian Urbanism, he has focused on the outskirts of major cities in Norway, strategic spatial planning, and the use of blue-green structures as tools in land-use planning. His work explores the relationship between physical spaces and the social and economic factors that influence urban life.
His recent publications demonstrate a strong focus on sustainable urban development, with particular attention to blue-green infrastructure, strategic spatial planning, and the development of urban peripheries. His work spans theoretical explorations of urbanism and practical applications in Norwegian municipalities, showing a consistent commitment to addressing contemporary urban challenges through architectural and planning solutions. Many of his recent works examine the relationship between nature and urban development, with blue-green infrastructure emerging as a key theme across multiple publications.
Ellefsen is actively involved in developing and enhancing AHO's courses and research environments, especially within urban planning and urbanism. Through the school and his own practice, he participates in interdisciplinary projects and collaborates closely with municipalities and other stakeholders in building and urban development in Norway. His teaching spans several levels, from bachelor's to master's and PhD, where he has developed courses and seminars that explore urban development, planning, and how architecture can be used as a tool to create more vibrant cities.
He is also active in disseminating academic knowledge through lectures, seminars, and exhibitions, contributing to the broader discourse on urban development both nationally and internationally.
