Hallvard Hodne Sandven is a Postdoctoral Fellow in the Department of Political Science at the University of Oslo, part of the Faculty of Social Sciences. He has previously held postdoctoral positions at Freie Universität Berlin and was a doctoral candidate at the University of Oxford, supported by an Aker Scholarship. His academic work is deeply rooted in political theory, with a focus on republican theory, state legitimacy, and migration policy.
His research centers on republican political theory, theories of the state, and border control and migration. Drawing from normative political philosophy, he explores how republican ideals of freedom as non-domination can inform debates on state sovereignty, exclusion, and institutional design. His work critically examines the legitimacy of border regimes, the delegation of power, and the moral implications of institutional conservatism.
The recent publications reveal a strong trajectory in high-impact journals such as American Journal of Political Science and Politics, Philosophy & Economics, with recurring themes of legitimacy, domination, and institutional symmetry. His forthcoming monograph with Oxford University Press will further consolidate his contributions to republican theory and migration ethics.
Hallvard is actively involved in research communities, including the Oslo Political Theory (OPT) group and the Practical Philosophy Group. He has collaborated with leading scholars such as Cécile Laborde and Antoinette Scherz. While no formal students are listed, his role as a lecturer at Magdalen College, Oxford, indicates teaching and mentorship experience.
