Antoinette Scherz is Associate Professor of Practical Philosophy at Stockholm University's Department of Philosophy. She simultaneously serves as Senior Researcher in the ENROL Project ("Enforcing the Rule of Law: What can the European Union do to prevent rule-of-law deterioration from within?") at ARENA, University of Oslo, and as research committee member for the Stockholm Center on Global Governance (SCGG), where she leads the theme "Enhancing Global Governance."
Her research program focuses on the intersection of political philosophy, international legal theory, and international relations, with particular attention to:
- Legitimacy of international institutions
- Transnational democracy
- Political autonomy
- Democratic backsliding in the European Union
- Human rights
- Migration
Dr. Scherz's scholarly work demonstrates a consistent engagement with normative questions about global governance structures. Her recent publications examine how democratic principles can be maintained in the face of challenges like democratic backsliding in EU member states and question the legitimacy foundations of international climate institutions. She approaches these issues through rigorous philosophical analysis combined with practical institutional considerations.
Her contributions to the field include publications in leading journals such as Critical Review of International Social and Political Philosophy, Journal of European Public Policy, and Moral Philosophy and Politics. Her work with the ENROL Project specifically addresses the normative justification for EU responses to rule-of-law violations, examining tools like suspension of voting rights versus expulsion of backsliding states.
Dr. Scherz's academic journey includes:
- PhD in Philosophy from University of Zurich (2014)
- Research Fellow at Swiss National Competence Centre for Excellence in Research Challenges to Democracy in the 21st Century
- Research Fellow and Permanent Board Member at Centre for Advanced Studies Justitia Amplificata, Goethe University Frankfurt (2014-2017)
- Postdoctoral positions at PluriCourts, University of Oslo (2017-2020) and University of Graz (2021-2023)
- Visiting researcher positions at Princeton University's Center for Human Values and McGill University
