Dr. Haliza Hassan is a Lecturer in Forensic Science at the School of Health & Life Sciences, Teesside University, where she contributes to teaching and research in forensic genetics and biology. She holds a PhD in Forensic Genetics from the University of Central Lancashire and has advanced qualifications in tertiary education and forensic science.
Education:
- Diploma in Postgraduate Certificate in Learning and Teaching in Higher Education (PgCLTHE), Fellow (FHEA), Teesside University (2024)
- Postgraduate Diploma in Tertiary Teaching, UCSI University (2022)
- MSc in Forensic Science, Teesside University (2019)
- PhD in Forensic Genetics, University of Central Lancashire (2017)
- BSc in Molecular Biology (Genetics), Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (2002)
Her research focuses on DNA profiling, phenotyping, wildlife forensics, and diatom analysis, with a strong emphasis on improving forensic methodologies for biological sample recovery. She explores applications in crime scene investigation, touch DNA stability, and DNA barcoding for species identification.
Her recent publications reflect a multidisciplinary approach, spanning forensic genetics, molecular diagnostics, and conservation biology. Key themes include optimization of DNA recovery protocols, forensic botany, and human identification using INDEL markers. These works demonstrate her expertise in both laboratory techniques and applied forensic research.
Scientific Awards:
- Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA)
Dr. Hassan has extensive experience as a Scientific Officer at the Forensic DNA Laboratory, Department of Chemistry, Malaysia, where she processed over 1,500 criminal cases and analyzed more than 20,000 biological samples. Her advisory and professional activities include training, public speaking, and leadership in forensic laboratory operations. Although no specific grants are listed, her research output indicates active engagement in collaborative forensic science projects.
She is involved in a growing research network, with collaborations in forensic biology and molecular diagnostics. Her work with diatoms, orchid DNA barcoding, and touch DNA places her at the intersection of forensic science, conservation, and biotechnology. She contributes to advancing forensic protocols and educational practices in higher education.
