Halil İnalcık was a renowned Ottoman historian and professor at Bilkent University from 1993 until his passing in 2016. He founded the Department of History at Bilkent and held previous academic appointments at Ankara University, the University of Chicago, Columbia University, Princeton University, Harvard University, and the University of Pennsylvania. His career spanned over seven decades, marked by significant contributions to Ottoman studies.
Prof. İnalcık earned his PhD in History from Ankara University, where he taught for over three decades before moving to the University of Chicago. His research focused on Ottoman socio-economic dynamics, cultural legacy, and imperial history, with works translated into languages such as Arabic, English, and Russian.
He received 23 honorary doctorates and held memberships in prestigious academies, including the Turkish Academy of Sciences and those in the US, UK, Serbia, and Albania. His legacy includes mentoring countless students who became leading scholars, and his rigorous teaching style earned him the title “Hocaların Hocası” (Professor of Professors).
Prof. İnalcık was honored posthumously with ceremonies at Ankara University and Bilkent University. He was buried at İstanbul’s Fatih Mosque, alongside historic Ottoman figures, a fitting tribute to his scholarly contributions.
