Hahn Koo is an Associate Professor in the Department of Linguistics and Language Development at San Jose State University's College of Humanities and the Arts. His research focuses on computational linguistics, Korean linguistics, phonology, and psycholinguistics. He currently serves as Director of the Center for Human Language Technology.
Research Interests include:
- Computational modeling of phoneme segmentation using transformer autoencoders
- Lexically guided perceptual learning recalibration mechanisms
- Speech synthesis technologies, particularly pattern playback systems
- Comparative analysis of voice quality in L2 speakers
- Bilingual children's speech fluency detection
His recent work demonstrates strong integration of machine learning techniques with acoustic phonetics, particularly through Python-based tool development for spectrogram-to-sound conversion. The research spans both theoretical phonology and applied speech technology, with significant emphasis on Korean-English bilingualism.
- Office hours: MTWR 13:30-14:00
- Teaching: LING 111 (Intro to Phonetics), LING 123 (Sound & Communication), LING 161 (Psycholinguistics)
He leads software development projects like the digital pattern playback system, which reconstructs waveforms from spectrogram images using inverse Fourier transforms and Griffin-Lim algorithms.
