Hafez Modirzadeh is a Professor of Creative/World Music at San Francisco State University, specializing in cross-cultural music, jazz, and ethnomusicology. A Grammy-nominated saxophonist, he holds an MA (1986) and PhD (1992) in ethnomusicology from UCLA and Wesleyan University, respectively. His work bridges jazz with global traditions, notably through his 'Chromodal Discourse' theory.
He has received NEA Fellowships, a Senior Fulbright Scholarship, and grants from Other Minds and Djerassi. Collaborations include performances with Omar Sosa, Don Cherry, and Zakir Hussain. At SFSU, he developed programs in jazz and world music, and his 2004-05 sabbatical in Andalucia led to a 2006 Fulbright in Spain, culminating in the album Bemsha Alegria.
Modirzadeh’s research appears in journals like Black Music Research and Leonardo. He recently premiered Beyond Song at SUNY New Paltz, sponsored by the NEA. His educational outreach has been supported by the California Arts Council.
