
Haeden Stewart

Haeden Stewart is an Assistant Professor of Anthropology at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. His research focuses on the long-term social and ecological effects of industrialization and industrial waste, particularly through archaeological methods applied to contemporary issues such as environmental degradation, migration, and settler colonialism. He currently leads the Ruby Archaeological Project examining industrial mining history in Southern Arizona.
- Education: PhD (2019) and MA (2011) in Anthropology from University of Chicago; B.A. (2009) in Archaeology from University of Toronto
Research interests emphasize industrial legacies in western North America, including coal mining and meatpacking in Alberta, and mining histories along the US-Mexico border. His work explores community impacts, toxic exposures, and landscape transformations. Stewart has conducted fieldwork across multiple regions including British Columbia, Mexico, Senegal, Peru, and Israel/Palestine.
He is actively mentoring graduate students interested in contemporary archaeology, the Anthropocene, and political ecology.
