Haakon Andreas Ikonomou serves as a Tenure Track Assistant Professor at the SAXO-Institute (Department of Archaeology, Ethnology, History and Greek & Latin) within the Faculty of Humanities at the University of Copenhagen. His scholarly work centers on the history of international organizations, internationalism, global governance structures, and diplomatic history, with particular expertise in the League of Nations era.
Dr. Ikonomou employs a diverse methodological toolkit including digital history approaches, global history frameworks, prosopographical analysis, biographical studies, institutional history, social history, and oral history techniques. His research often examines the bureaucratic dimensions of international institutions, with his current ERC Consolidator Project "INNER_LEAGUE" focusing specifically on the social-bureaucratic history of the League of Nations Secretariat (2025-2030).
Analysis of his recent publications reveals a strong thematic focus on the historical development of international law frameworks, the evolution of global governance structures, and the complex interplay between national sovereignty and international cooperation. His scholarship spans from the interwar period through the Cold War to contemporary international relations, with particular attention to Scandinavian diplomatic history and European integration processes.

As an academic supervisor, Dr. Ikonomou has guided numerous MA students through their theses on diverse topics including Cold War diplomacy, European integration, transnational sports governance, and nuclear power politics. Beyond his ERC project, he previously led the DFF-funded collective project "Autonomy and Expertise in International Administrations, 1940s-1970s" (2022-2025) and maintains active research collaborations across Europe.
Dr. Ikonomou holds significant leadership roles as Director of HUM:Global (Faculty of Humanities), co-director of CHIOS (Centre for History, Strategy and International Order - University of Copenhagen / Helmut-Schmidt-Universität Hamburg), and co-chair of META-UN (Flagship 2, 4EU+ University Alliance), demonstrating his substantial influence in shaping research agendas and international academic collaborations within historical and international relations scholarship.
