H. Steve White is a Professor and Chair of the Department of Pharmacy at the University of Washington School of Pharmacy, where he also serves as Co-Director of the Center for Epilepsy Drug Discovery (CEDD). His academic appointment spans multiple units including the Department of Pharmacy, Pharmacy Faculty, and School Faculty.
Dr. White earned his baccalaureate degree in Pharmacy and M.S. in Pharmacology from Idaho State University, followed by a Ph.D. in Pharmacology from the University of Utah. He previously served as the principal investigator and scientific director of the NIH-sponsored Anticonvulsant Drug Development (ADD) Program before joining the University of Washington as Chair of the Department of Pharmacy in January 2016.
His research spans multiple areas of epilepsy and pharmacology, with particular focus on the early discovery of anti-seizure drugs, animal seizure and epilepsy models for drug discovery, pharmaco-resistant epilepsy, impact of medication adherence on seizure control, comorbidities of epilepsy, prevention and disease modification of epilepsy, and the role of community pharmacists in chronic epilepsy management. His work bridges basic science with clinical applications through translational research.
Dr. White's publication record demonstrates consistent contributions to the field of epilepsy research with recent publications focusing on drug resistance mechanisms, GABA-targeting therapies, and new antiepileptic drug development. His work shows a clear trajectory from basic mechanisms of seizure activity toward clinical applications and drug development.
- Honorary Doctor of Science from The University of Copenhagen Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences (2011)
- Epilepsy Foundation's Lifetime Accelerator Award (2014)
Dr. White has received significant research funding from the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS) and National Institutes of Health (NIH). He served as Research Director of CURE (Citizen's United for Research in Epilepsy) from November 2011 to October 2015 and continues as a Research Advisor to CURE's team-science initiatives. He has been actively mentoring the next generation of neuroscientists and epilepsy educators.
He co-organized NIH-sponsored workshops on models of refractory epilepsy and epileptogenesis and serves on the organizing committee of the biannual Eilat Conferences on Antiepileptic Drug Development. His leadership extends to the Center for Epilepsy Drug Discovery (CEDD), which he co-directs at the University of Washington.
