Prof. Gülay Altay serves as Professor of Civil Engineering at Ozyegin University, following a distinguished 27+ year career at Boğaziçi University where she became full professor in 1988 and held key leadership roles including Civil Engineering Department Chair (1992-1998, 2013-2015) and Director of the Kandilli Observatory and Earthquake Research Institute (2006-2009).
Her academic foundation spans BSc (1970), MSc (1971), and PhD (1977) degrees in Civil Engineering from Istanbul Technical University, complemented by international research appointments at Princeton University (1975-1977), Lehigh University (1981-1982), and George Washington University (1987-1988).
Prof. Altay's research critically addresses structural vulnerability through specialized expertise in:
- Seismic design and retrofitting of historical structures
- Advanced steel structure systems (including cold-formed and smart structures)
- Structural stability mechanisms and connection technologies
- Earthquake-resistant control systems for urban infrastructure
Her work directly informs practical disaster response, evidenced by leadership in Boğaziçi University's post-earthquake reconstruction after the Dinar and Adana disasters. She drives international collaboration as Turkey's representative in COST Actions (C1, C26), FP-6 PROHITECH, ANDROID-Resilient Cities, and NATO-SfP projects. Currently, she develops national earthquake risk management guidelines for historical structures under the General Directorate of Foundations.
