Götz Bokelmann is a Professor of Geophysics at the Institute of Meteorology and Geophysics, University of Vienna, since 2010. He previously held positions at Stanford University (1998-2003) and University of Montpellier (2003-2010). His research spans seismology, geodynamics, and seismic hazard assessment.
- Born: Würzburg, Germany
- Education: Abitur (Heidelberg, 1980), Diplom (Bochum, 1987), PhD (Princeton, 1992)
His research focuses on:
- Seismic anisotropy and wave propagation
- Crustal and mantle dynamics
- Earthquake cycle and stress fields
- Passive seismic monitoring applications
- Nuclear verification through geophysical methods
- Deep Earth structure imaging
Recent publications highlight advancements in ambient noise tomography for mapping mantle transition zones and water reservoir vulnerabilities. His 2024-2025 projects include geothermal optimization (GO-Forward) and Alpine seismic monitoring (AlpArray Österreich 2).
Scientific honors include:
- Heisenberg Fellowship (1999)
- Fellow, Geological Society of America (2000)
- Prime d'encadrement doctoral (2004-2012)
Active in international collaborations, Bokelmann serves as associate editor and leads seismic research initiatives across Europe and global cratonic regions. His work combines field observations with advanced waveform analysis to address fundamental geodynamic questions.
