Gál Zoltán is a full Professor at the University of Pécs, Faculty of Economics, and a Senior Research Fellow at the Centre for Economic and Regional Studies (KRTK), Institute for Regional Studies, Transdanubian Research Department. He has held academic and research positions at the University of Kaposvár, University of Miskolc, and has been affiliated with the Hungarian Academy of Sciences for decades. His work bridges economic geography, regional finance, and innovation policy, with strong engagement in EU-level research programs such as ESPON, INTERREG, and FP7.
His research focuses on regional economics, financial geography, and innovation systems, particularly in Central and Eastern Europe. Key areas include regional finance, economic geography of services, innovation management, and the financial dimensions of European integration. He has contributed to historical geography and banking history, linking past economic structures to contemporary development patterns.
His scholarly output informs regional development strategies and policy frameworks. Though specific recent articles are not listed here, his work has been recognized internationally, including the SASE Eastern European Prize. His editorial roles include the journals Tér és Társadalom (Space & Society), Journal of Innovation & Entrepreneurship (Springer), and Journal of Economic Development, Environment and People.

He has supervised PhD students through the Doctoral School of Regional Policy and Economics at the University of Pécs and served as consultant and supervisor in doctoral programs at Kaposvár University. He has led national and international research projects, including OTKA #82018 on FDI impacts, ESPON, INTERREG, and FP7 RASTANEWS. He has also directed regional foresight initiatives and IPA pre-accession projects.
Gál Zoltán is actively involved in research networks such as the Regional Studies Association (organizer of research networks on geographies of finance and outsourcing), and serves as Regional Ambassador for the Global Network of Financial Geography. He is a member of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences Committee of Regional Science and has held leadership roles in the Hungarian Regional Science Association, where he served as president from 2017.
