Gábor Egry is the István Deák Visiting Professor in the Department of History at Columbia University. His research focuses on the political and social history of East Central Europe, particularly the legacy of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, nationalism, and minority dynamics in successor states.
Education: PhD in History (2006) and MA in History (1999), both from Eötvös Loránd University, Budapest. He has held prestigious fellowships including the ERC Consolidator Grant (2018-2023) and the Fernand Braudel Senior Fellowship at the European University Institute.
Key research interests include imperial legacies, ethnic identity formation, and state-building processes in post-WWI East Central Europe. His recent articles analyze economic transitions in the Banat region, historiographical debates on Hungarian revolutions, and the contested construction of nation-states in interwar Romania.
Awards include the 2018 Mark Pittaway Prize and the 2025 Vehudit Yehuda Elkana Fellowship. He has published extensively on topics such as minority politics, regionalism, and the interplay between local elites and nationalizing states.
