Gwynn Kessler is an Associate Professor of Religion at Swarthmore College, with affiliations in Libraries and Gender & Sexuality Studies. She specializes in rabbinic interpretation (midrash), rabbinic theology, and rabbinic constructions of gender/identity, employing postmodern, feminist, and queer theoretical approaches.
She holds a Ph.D. in Rabbinics from Jewish Theological Seminary (2001) and previously taught at UNC Greensboro and University of Florida. Her research includes the award-winning book Conceiving Israel: The Fetus in Rabbinic Narratives (2009), exploring how fetal imagery reflects rabbinic notions of ethnicity and theology.
