Dr. Gwyn A Beattie is the Robert Earle Buchanan Distinguished Professor of Bacteriology at Iowa State University. Her work focuses on understanding plant-associated microbial genomics and ecology, particularly in vascular pathogens like Erwinia tracheiphila and Serratia marcescens. She explores microbiome assembly under abiotic stress and light-driven microbial behavior in plant pathogens such as Pseudomonas syringae.
Beattie holds a B.A. in Chemistry from Carleton College (1985) and a Ph.D. in Cellular and Molecular Biology from the University of Wisconsin-Madison (1991), followed by postdoctoral research at UC Berkeley. She teaches courses on bacterial-plant interactions and microbial ecology and leads a research group comprising scientists, postdocs, graduate students, and undergraduates.
Her research interests span plant-microbe interactions, microbial community dynamics, and applications in agriculture. Recent work highlights soil microbiome engineering for carbon sequestration and rhizosphere strategies to mitigate drought stress. She has published extensively on pathogen virulence mechanisms, including studies on Ralstonia solanacearum and Xanthomonas citri.
Dr. Beattie is a Fellow of the American Phytopathological Society (APS) and serves as Co-Editor-in-Chief of the Annual Review of Phytopathology. She contributes to professional organizations like the International Alliance for Phytobiomes Research and has advised on national and international initiatives, including climate action workshops and phytobiome research.
