Dr. Gwennan Higham is a Senior Lecturer in the Welsh Department within the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences at Swansea University. She joined the university in October 2016 after completing her doctorate at Cardiff University's School of Welsh, where her research focused on teaching Welsh to immigrants and shaping paths to inclusive Welsh citizenship. Fluent in Welsh, she maintains an active presence through her Twitter account @gwennanelin and LinkedIn profile.
Dr. Higham's research centers on Welsh as a second language, minority languages, immigration, integration, multiculturalism, interculturalism, and citizenship. Her work bridges theoretical and practical approaches to language learning for migrants, with particular focus on how Welsh language acquisition contributes to personal integration projects and meaningful multicultural citizenship in Wales.
Her publication record demonstrates consistent scholarly output since 2012, with recent work focusing on practical applications of Welsh language learning for migrants, integration frameworks, and the role of minority languages in healthcare settings. Her research shows a clear trajectory toward examining how language education can strengthen agency and personal growth for migrants beyond traditional monolingual integration approaches.

Dr. Higham actively supervises multiple PhD students working on diverse projects related to bilingualism, multilingual approaches with ESOL learners, language policy, and linguistic integration. She has secured significant funding including an EU-funded project (2016-2019) focused on healthcare in minority language settings and research on Persian-speaking migrants' attitudes toward Swedish language learning (2020). Her work demonstrates strong engagement with both academic and practical applications of language policy and integration frameworks.
