Gwenllian Tawy

Gwenllian Tawy is a Research Fellow and Lecturer in Medical Education at the University of Manchester, affiliated with the Division of Cell Matrix Biology & Regenerative Medicine. Her academic roles combine research in biomechanics and orthopaedics with teaching in medical education. She holds a PhD in Biomedical Engineering from the University of Strathclyde (2018), an MRes in Biomedical Engineering (2014), and a BSc in Anatomy (2013) from the University of Glasgow.

Her research focuses on lower limb biomechanics, particularly knee biomechanics, cartilage injury, and osteoarthritis. She investigates novel treatments for cartilage repair and joint preservation, including autologous chondrocyte implantation and regenerative therapies. Her current Fellowship, funded by Orthopaedic Research UK and the British Association for Surgery of the Knee, examines biomechanical outcomes of cartilage repair techniques.

Tawy is actively involved in patient-centered research, hosting focus groups to guide future studies on osteoarthritis and collaborating with clinicians. She serves as a Patient Registry Manager for the International Cartilage Regeneration & Joint Preservation Society. Her work aligns with UN Sustainable Development Goals related to health and education.

She has received several awards, including the BioMedEng18 Travel Award (2018) and ON Foundation/ICRS Fellowship (2022). Her publications span biomechanical analyses, clinical trials, and systematic reviews in journals like Journal of Clinical Orthopaedics and Trauma and Knee Surgery, Sports Traumatology, Arthroscopy.

As a STEM Ambassador, Tawy promotes biomedical engineering and orthopaedics in schools, organizing career events and public engagement activities. She also peer-reviews for journals such as BMJ Open Quality and Computer Methods in Biomechanics and Biomedical Engineering.
