معرفی
Guy A Howard is a Research Professor in the Department of Medicine at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, with a secondary appointment in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. He serves as Research Director of the Geriatric Research, Education, and Clinical Center (GRECC) at the Miami VA Healthcare System, where he previously held the role of Deputy Director until 2019. With over 35 years of continuous NIH/VA grant funding, he oversees research in bone biology and stem cell applications for age-related diseases.
Education:
- B.A., University of Washington (1965)
- M.S., Central Washington University (1967)
- Ph.D., University of Oregon (1970)
- Postdoctoral Training: UC Davis and Meischer Institute, Basel, Switzerland
Research Focus: Dr. Howard investigates bone metabolism, osteoporosis, and regenerative medicine using human mesenchymal stem cells (hMSCs). His work explores molecular pathways influenced by growth factors (e.g., hepatocyte growth factor), vitamin D metabolites, and low-oxygen environments to enhance tissue repair in aging. His research aims to translate findings into therapies for age-related bone loss.
Publication Trends: Recent articles (2011–2016) emphasize stem cell differentiation mechanisms, growth factor interactions, and vitamin D's role in osteogenesis. Key themes include mesenchymal stem cell behavior under stress, cancer-bone microenvironment crosstalk, and therapeutic targets for bone regeneration in geriatric populations.
Grants & Leadership: He managed the GRECC's research portfolio for 30+ years, fostering VA-university collaborations. His lab focuses on stem cell-based solutions for age-related degenerative conditions.
