Gustavo Souza Marques (Gusmão) is an Assistant Professor of Musicology at the University of Michigan’s School of Music, Theatre & Dance (SMTD). His research focuses on hip-hop in the Americas, postcolonialism, critical race theory, and media studies. He holds a PhD in Ethnomusicology from University College Cork (UCC) and has conducted fieldwork across Latin America and the Caribbean.
- Education: BA in Social Communication (2009), MA in Music and Culture (2013), PhD in Ethnomusicology (2021).
- Key Projects: Author of the forthcoming book Tyler, The Creator: Hip Hop’s Revolution—Beyond Gangsta (2026) and co-founder of the SMTD Hip Hop Coalition.
- Artistic Work: Produces experimental hip-hop albums, including Urso Futurismo (2025) and Cut Through (2025), blending Brazilian and Caribbean genres.
His research explores intersections of magical realism, ecomusicology, and transmodernism in hip-hop. He has collaborated with artists like MC Luka and led global hip-hop knowledge mapping as part of the CIPHER project.
