Gustaf Marcus is a Researcher in literary studies at the Department of Literature and Rhetoric, Uppsala University, specializing in contemporary French literature and Scandinavian literature around the turn of the 20th century. His research examines how literature engages with cultural and social issues including spatiality, regionalism, advertising, and normality.
His current research project, France (Un)Seen by the Writers: Glocalization and Re-Regionalization in the Contemporary French Novel (2005–2025), explores representations of regionalism and peripheral places in contemporary French literature, funded by Riksbankens Jubileumsfond. Marcus has also conducted significant research on literature and advertising, examining how authors like Strindberg, Hamsun, and the French surrealists engaged with modern advertising practices.
- PhD from Linköping University (2018)
- Master's degree in Comparative Literature from the Sorbonne (2011)
- Postdoctoral researcher at Uppsala University and the Sorbonne (2019-2023)
His publications demonstrate a consistent focus on spatial theory, regional representation, and the intersection of literature with visual culture and advertising. His work frequently analyzes authors including Michel Houellebecq, Marie Darrieussecq, August Strindberg, and Knut Hamsun through theoretical frameworks of glocalization, normalization, and spatial representation.
