Guoquan Wang is a Professor in the Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences at the University of Houston, with a focus on geophysics, geodesy, and geosensing systems engineering. He has maintained a dual research focus on:
- Applications of GPS Geodesy and LIDAR in geological hazard studies
- Structural health monitoring and tectonic deformation analysis
His recent work examines coastal hazards like faulting and subsidence in the Gulf Coast, and Caribbean neotectonics. He leads the development of stable geodetic reference frames (GOM20, CARIB18, NChina20) for hazard monitoring.
The 15 most recent publications show expertise in:
- Land subsidence from groundwater withdrawal
- GNSS time series uncertainty analysis
- Seasonal ground deformation patterns
- Coastal erosion monitoring
- Earthquake ground motion studies
- Structural deformation modeling
Wang actively supervises graduate students and collaborates with institutions in China and the Caribbean. His teaching portfolio includes courses on:
- Satellite Positioning and Geodesy
- Geoscience Applications of GPS/LIDAR
- Solid Earth Geophysics
He operates the HoustonNet GNSS array and contributes to software packages like GNSS_Vel_95CI.py. His lab works on integrating geodetic infrastructure with environmental policy and urban planning solutions.
