Gunnar Spreen

Dr. Gunnar Spreen serves as a Research Scientist and Group Leader at the University of Bremen, where he coordinates remote sensing activities for the landmark MOSAiC (Multidisciplinary drifting Observatory for the Study of Arctic Climate) expedition. His leadership focuses on comprehensive interdisciplinary measurements conducted during winter in the Central Arctic aboard the research vessel Polarstern.

His research centers on Remote Sensing and Sea Ice dynamics within Arctic climate systems, with particular emphasis on winter conditions in the Central Arctic. Dr. Spreen actively leads international teams to collect high-resolution datasets that bridge atmospheric, oceanic, and cryospheric processes, aiming to resolve critical gaps in climate modeling through cutting-edge observational techniques.

The MOSAiC expedition under his coordination spans five integrated scientific domains: Atmosphere, Sea Ice, Ocean, Biogeochemistry, and Ecosystem research. This holistic approach generates unprecedented datasets examining feedback mechanisms between physical, chemical, and biological components of the Arctic system during the polar night.
